a. 1 40mm.; cl. Aggressive)

Prestige (AM 465) was laid down 15 April 1952 by Wilmington Boat Works, Wilmington, Calif., Iaunehed 30 April 1954; sponsored by Mrs. William R. Poulson; and commissioned 11 September 1954, Lt. C. L. Frink in command.

After shakedown and reclassification to MSO-465 on 7 February 1955, Prestige participated in various exercises out of Long Beach, Calif., until she deployed 4 January 1956 to WestPac, proceeding via Pearl Harbor and Midway to serve with the 7th Fleet. Her WestPac tour of 1956 included landing exercises at Iwo Jima in February and April. Following a visit to Yokosuka, Japan, she returned to Long Beach 15 June for local operations. Sailing for the Panama Canal 30 August 1957, she conducted operations on both the Atlantic and the Pacific sides of the Canal. Heading for Long Beach 23 November, she eommeneed overhaul upon arrival.

Deployed to WestPae in 1958, Prestige ran aground in Naruto Straits, Inland Sea, Japan, 23 August 1958, and was abandoned as a total loss.

Refuting Challenges to the Accepted Chronology of Achaemenid Empire

This paper examines the chronology of the Neo-Babylonian and Achaemenid Empires and weighs Martin Anstey’s claim that the Ptolemy’s Royal Canon includes 82 fabricated years of Persian history in order to fit an artificial Greek chronology invented by Eratosthenes.

Methodology included review of the testimony of ancient chronologers, inscriptions, astronomical tablets and business tablets to determine if the Royal Canon’s chronology can be reconstructed entirely from other ancient sources. We found that the Persian Chronology can be reconstructed from multiple ancient sources, and does not rely upon the Royal Canon as a primary source. We conclude that Anstey’s assertions are impossible to reconcile with ancient records and modern astronomy.

Keywords: Achaemenid chronology, Persian chronology, Martin Anstey, biblical chronology

The scramble for colonies

The most obvious result of the Congress and of nationalist yearnings, juxtaposed with a more structured European map, was a new and general scramble for colonies in other parts of the world. Even before the 1870s some new gains had occurred. French explorers fanned out in equatorial Africa, and a French mission began the conquest of Indochina in the 1860s. Many European nations exhibited a growing interest in colonies as sources of raw materials and new markets and as potential outlets for excess population and for administrators who could not be accommodated at home. Opportunities for individual adventurism and profit also ran high. Overriding motivations for the climactic imperialist scramble involved a desire to appeal to domestic nationalism and an interest in maintaining or gaining place as world powers. New nations such as Italy and Germany sought empires to prove their status France sought expansion to compensate for its humiliating defeat at Germany’s hands Britain pressed outward in order to protect existing colonies. Russia, and at the century’s end the United States and Japan, also joined the competition.

Between 1880 and 1900 much of Asia was divided. Britain held Burma Britain, Germany, France, and the United States divided the Pacific islands of Polynesia. All the major European powers save Italy took advantage of China’s weakness to acquire long-term leases on port cities and surrounding regions, easily putting down the Chinese Boxer Rebellion against Western encroachments in 1899–1900. Germany gained new advisory and investment roles within the Ottoman Empire, while Britain and Russia divided spheres of influence in Afghanistan Britain also effectively controlled several small states on the Persian Gulf.

The dismemberment of Africa was even more complete. Portugal expanded its control over Angola and Mozambique, Belgium took over the giant Congo region, and Germany gained new colonies in southern Africa. Britain and France, the big winners, gained new territory in West Africa, and Britain built a network of colonies in East Africa running from South Africa to Egypt. The French occupation of Morocco and the Italian conquest of Tripoli, after 1900, completed the process. Only Ethiopia remained fully free, defeating an Italian force in 1896.

History

Though traces of prehistoric settlement exist, Babylon’s development as a major city was late by Mesopotamian standards no mention of it existed before the 23rd century bce . After the fall of the 3rd dynasty of Ur, under which Babylon had been a provincial centre, it became the nucleus of a small kingdom established in 1894 bce by the Amorite king Sumuabum, whose successors consolidated its status. The sixth and best-known of the Amorite dynasts, Hammurabi (1792–50 bce ), conquered the surrounding city-states and raised Babylon to the capital of a kingdom comprising all of southern Mesopotamia and part of Assyria (northern Iraq). Its political importance, together with its favourable location, made it henceforth the main commercial and administrative centre of Babylonia, while its wealth and prestige made it a target for foreign conquerors.

After a Hittite raid in 1595 bce , the city passed to the control of the Kassites (c. 1570), who established a dynasty lasting more than four centuries. Later in this period, Babylon became a literary and religious centre, the prestige of which was reflected in the elevation of Marduk, its chief god, to supremacy in Mesopotamia. In 1234 Tukulti-Ninurta I of Assyria subjugated Babylon, though subsequently the Kassite dynasty reasserted itself until 1158, when the city was sacked by the Elamites. Babylon’s acknowledged political supremacy is shown by the fact that the dynasty of Nebuchadrezzar I (1124–03), which endured for more than a century, made the city its capital, though the dynasty did not originate there.

Just before 1000, pressure from Aramaean immigrants from northern Syria brought administrative dislocation inside Babylon. From this period to the fall of Assyria in the late 7th century bce , there was a continual struggle between Aramaean or associated Chaldean tribesmen and the Assyrians for political control of the city. Its citizens claimed privileges, such as exemption from forced labour, certain taxes, and imprisonment, which the Assyrians, with a similar background, were usually readier to recognize than were immigrant tribesmen. Furthermore, the citizens, grown wealthy through commerce, benefitted from an imperial power able to protect international trade but suffered economically at the hands of disruptive tribesmen. Such circumstances made Babylon usually prefer Assyrian to Aramaean or Chaldean rule.

From the 9th to the late 7th century Babylon was almost continuously under Assyrian suzerainty, usually wielded through native kings, though sometimes Assyrian kings ruled in person. Close Assyrian involvement in Babylon began with Tiglath-pileser III (744–727 bce ) as a result of Chaldean tribesmen pressing into city territories, several times usurping the kingship. Disorders accompanying increasing tribal occupation finally persuaded the Assyrian monarch Sennacherib (704–681 bce ) that peaceful control of Babylon was impossible, and in 689 he ordered destruction of the city. His son Esarhaddon (680–669 bce ) rescinded that policy, and, after expelling the tribesmen and returning the property of the Babylonians to them, undertook the rebuilding of the city but the image of Marduk, removed by Sennacherib, was retained in Assyria throughout his reign, probably to prevent any potential usurper from using it to claim the kingship. In the mid-7th century, civil war broke out between the Assyrian king Ashurbanipal and his brother who ruled in Babylonia (southern Mesopotamia) as sub-king. Ashurbanipal laid siege to the city, which fell to him in 648 after famine had driven the defenders to cannibalism.

After Ashurbanipal’s death, a Chaldean leader, Nabopolassar, in 626 made Babylon the capital of a kingdom that under his son Nebuchadrezzar II (605–561 bce ) became a major imperial power. Nebuchadrezzar undertook a vast program of rebuilding and fortification in Babylon, labour gangs from many lands increasing the mixture of the population. Nebuchadrezzar’s most important successor, Nabonidus (556–539 bce ), campaigned in Arabia for a decade, leaving his son Belshazzar as regent in Babylon. Nabonidus failed to protect the property rights or religious traditions of the capital and attempted building operations elsewhere to rival Marduk’s great temple of Esagila. When the Persian Achaemenian dynasty under Cyrus II attacked in 539 bce , the capital fell almost without resistance a legend (accepted by some as historical) that Cyrus achieved entry by diverting the Euphrates is unconfirmed in contemporary sources.

Under the Persians, Babylon retained most of its institutions, became capital of the richest satrapy in the empire, and was, according to the 5th-century- bce Greek historian Herodotus, the world’s most splendid city. A revolt against Xerxes I (482) led to destruction of its fortifications and temples and to the melting down of the golden image of Marduk.

In 331 Babylon surrendered to the Macedonian king Alexander the Great, who confirmed its privileges and ordered the restoration of the temples. Alexander, recognizing the commercial importance of the city, allowed its satrap to coin money and began constructing a harbour to foster trade. In 323 Alexander died in the palace of Nebuchadrezzar he had planned to make Babylon his imperial capital. Alexander’s conquest brought Babylon into the orbit of Greek culture, and Hellenistic science was greatly enriched by the contributions of Babylonian astronomy. After a power struggle among Alexander’s generals, Babylon passed to the Seleucid dynasty in 312. The city’s importance was much reduced by the building of a new capital, Seleucia on the Tigris, where part of Babylon’s population was transferred in 275.

Visualization - BS

The mission of the Bachelor of Science in Visualization program is to engage and develop the student’s visual, intuitive and analytical capabilities through the scientific and aesthetic issues surrounding the use of technology in visual communication. To fulfill its mission, the program requires both a creative spirit and the technical understanding to adapt to the changing demands of the visual industries served by the departmental programs.

The curriculum integrates elements of fine arts, three-dimensional design, programming and digital technology to provide a broad, wide-ranging educational experience. The core of the program is the studio experience, which explores the relationship between theory and practices through a variety of exercises and projects using traditional and electronic media. A semester away from Texas A&M University is required during the Junior year. This is followed by a capstone proposal and studio during the Junior and Senior years. A broad range of directed electives allows the student to gain an in-depth understanding of an area of specialization.

Graduates of the program are prepared to be technically adept artists, designers and/or tool-makers capable of utilizing interactive and directed media. Employment may be found in such fields as user interface and web design, the entertainment industry (game design and development, animation and visual effects), as well as fields such as modeling and simulation, data analytics and other fields where visualization contributes to understanding. Alternatively, graduates may enter graduate programs that emphasize digital media in either computer science or art/design. Two such programs, the Master of Science (MS) in Visualization and the Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Visualization, are offered by the Department of Visualization at Texas A&M University.

Resisting The extreme

Features

The additional arrow-shaped 24-hour hand of the Explorer II circles the dial once a day and is used in relation to the engraved fixed bezel. It can indicate the time in a second time zone or show the time in 24-hour format – a practical option in places where distinguishing day from night is impossible, such as at the poles or in caves.

The Explorer is available in Oystersteel or in a yellow Rolesor version, whereas the Explorer II watches are made of Oystersteel. Specially developed by Rolex, Oystersteel belongs to the 904L steel family – superalloys that are most commonly used in high technology such as in the aerospace and chemical industries. Oystersteel is extremely resistant, offers an exceptional finish once polished and maintains its sheen even in the harshest environments.

The Twinlock winding crown on the Explorer and Explorer II is fitted with a double waterproofness system. It features two sealed zones, one inside the tube, the other inside the crown. This principle is used on most of the watches in the Oyster collection that are guaranteed waterproof to 100 metres (330 feet).

The Explorer is equipped with calibre 3230 and the Explorer II with calibre 3285, both self-winding mechanical movements entirely developed and manufactured by Rolex. They feature a Parachrom hairspring that provides great stability in the face of temperature variations, and Paraflex shock absorbers offering greater resistance to shocks.

Thorens Milestones

Throughout the company's history, Thorens has developed a number of devices that have become milestones in the history of consumer electronics. The most important are listed in this list. In maintained condition, even the oldest devices on this list still offer high to highest playback quality.

Thorens TD 124 / TD 124 Mk II (1956 - 1968)

The Thorens TD 124 set standards in quality and reliability in record reproduction when it appeared on the market. Its elaborately designed drive was based on an idler wheel, which was driven to reduce engine influences by a short belt. The two-piece platter was designed so that a record change without stopping the engine was possible. Initially equipped with the tone arm Thorens TP 14, later came versions with different arm bases and matching plinths. Legendary here was the equipment with long SME 3012 arms. According to the time records could be played at all four speeds (16 / 33.3 / 45/78 rpm). Even today, the Thorens TD 124 is in great demand and prices for maintained devices regularly exceed the then new price many times over.

The Thorens TD 150, an inconspicuous small turntable that was manufactured for the first time in Germany and was offered much cheaper than the TD 124, was the origin of a technical revolution in turntable construction. For the first time, a suspended subchassis using cone springs with an inner platter driven by a flat belt was used in a high-volume machine. The principle has proven to be very successful and has found many imitators in the years since. The TD 150 came as standard with the tonearm TP 13, from 1969 the TD 150 Mk II with the TP 13a, also known as "ball arm". Countless variants with other tonearms were added and still exist in large numbers. All subsequent models until the mid-1980s kept the principle of the suspended subchassis with conical springs, which was used here for the first time.

Thorens TD 125 / TD 125 MK II (1968 - 1975)

From 1968 Thorens TD 125 followed the TD 124. He took over the principle of the spring subchassis from TD 150, but was designed as a large and heavy drive for a different audience than the smaller one. The TD 125 also used for the first time an electronic control for the 220V synchronous motor, achieving an excellent running smoothness and speed stability. Originally the turntable was equipped with tonearm Thorens TP 25, later as Mk II also with the original TP 16. A variant with larger frame called TD 125 LB allowed the installation of long tonearms up to 16". For professional use, for example. In discos it was possible to replace the conical springs with rubber buffers.

Thorens TD 160 (1972 - 1990s in all Versions)

The TD 160 is now considered the classic Thorens subchassis turntable. Introduced in 1972, he replaced the smaller TD 150 and was produced in all versions until the 1990s. Heavier and more stable than its predecessor, the principle of the suspended subchassis has always been preserved.
In addition to the models TD 160 - TD 160 Mk V there were a large number of variants with reinforced chassis (TD 160 super), with auto shut off (series TD 145/146/147), with a lightweight inner platter and small platter bearing (series TD 165/166 ), with different tonearms (TP 11, TP 11 Mk II, TP 16 - TP 16 Mk IV, TP 50, TP 90) and without tonearm for fitting with any arm of choice (TD 160 BC). All these variants used a synchronous motor (initially 220 V mains synchronous, later 16 V low voltage) without electronic control.
The last series, the TD 160 S Mk V had an auto shut off and was equipped with the outstanding tonearm Thorens TP 90. Correctly set, the MK V is still an excellent device that needs no comparison to shy away.

Thorens TD 126 Mk I - Mk IV, TD 127, TD 226 (1976 - 1986)

In 1976 TD 126 replaced the TD 125. The new models offered comfort features such as electric lift, auto shut off and in the most successful model, the TD 126 Mk III, for the first time a tacho controlled DC motor to compensate short-term fluctuations in speed, for example, by record brushs.
Instead of the proven Thorens TP 16 Mk III, various third-party arms (SME, Koshin, Dynavector) could be delivered directly from the factory, whereby the automatic functions were most retained.
The Thorens turntables TD 127 and TD 226 were derivatives of the TD 126 for long 12“ tone arms (TD 127) and for mounting two tonearms to the right and left of the turntable platter (TD 226). Both models had a correspondingly enlarged frame and a customized sub-chassis. With the series for the first time a vaccum platter mat was offered for calming uneven records. Today, the models TD 127 and TD 226 are strongly demanded by collectors who will pay much more than the original price for them.

Thorens TD 320 / TD 320 MK II / TD 320 Mk III (1984 - 1993)

In 1984, Thorens introduced the 300 Series (TD 316/318/320) for the first time with a new variant of the suspended sub-chassis: leaf springs were designed to neutralize any horizontal movements of the subchassis which did appear when using conical springs. The TD 320 first became the top model of this series. Equipped with the proven tonearm TP 16 Mk III, later Mk IV, TD 320 Mk II and Mk III of the TD 320 got the new TP 90 tonearm. Added to this was a motor control with a two-phase generator, which guaranteed excellent wow & flutter values.
TD 321 came without tonearm, TD 320 "Phantasie" had a transparent acrylic chassis, the "Concrete" a concrete base.
Further developments with better damping and modified subchassis were the later models TD 325, TD 2001, TD 3001, as well as the end of the 1980s in a small series with design frame, SME tonearm and elaborate power supply produced Thorens „Ambience".
The models TD 2001 and TD 3001 are considered by many today as the best over all quality of Thorens turntables before year 2000.

Thorens Reference und Prestige

In 1980, Thorens decided, regardless of cost, to develop and market an ultimative turntable. The result was called Thorens Reference, weighed 90 kg, was designed for up to three tonearms and had a tunable subchassis! Externally, the Reference looked like any kind of mass drive, in which simply a heavy platter is placed on an even heavier framework and smoothness is generated solely by mass. But the Reference was different, the design was much smarter. Simply, that it had a subchassis and the platter weighed only 6 kg, makes it unique. The model was made on request in an official edition of 100 pieces, customers could choose individual color combinations and order individual tonearms. The price was exorbitantly high at almost 18,000 DM just for the turntable but is now significantly surpassed for used devices.

In 1983, for the 100th anniversary of the company, another large model entered the market: the Thorens Prestige. Qualitatively equivalent to the Reference, with subchassis and electrical lifts for two tonearms. A super drive also by today's standards and unique because of its subchassis.
