JANUARY 31

The Battle of Stalingrad Ends - 1943

On this date, the Battle of Stalingrad, which took place during World War II of 1943, ends after 6 months of fighting, marking the beginning of the Nazi defeat with Russia's victory over Germany. The victory of the Soviets over the Nazis and the consequent liberation of Eastern European countries was a major surprise to the Western allies who precipitated the "Normandy Landing" to secure and preserve economic interests in Europe. Of Hitler's 300,000 fighters, 90,000 die of cold and starvation and more than 100,000 are shot.
